All plants have unique needs, and indoor plants are no different. Here are five basic tips to nurture your house plants. They involve a bit of attention and effort but will soon help your plants thrive.

  1. Plant Needs: Each plant has different requirements for light, water, humidity, and temperature. Do a little research to determine the environment the plant grows best in. A quick Google search is all it takes.
  2. Water: Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes in caring for house plants. Several factors can influence watering needs. For example, humidity levels, pot size, and soil type also affect watering frequency. Generally, it’s better to let the soil dry slightly between waterings rather than keeping it constantly damp. I recommend using a moisture meter or the simple finger trick: if the soil is dry about two inches from the top (approximately to your second knuckle), it’s time to water.
  3. Light:Light is crucial for photosynthesis, which is how plants make their food and grow. Position plants where they can get the right amount of light for their specific needs. If your home doesn’t get a lot of natural light, consider using artificial grow lights designed for indoor plants or picking plants that require low-light environments.
  4. Humidity:Indoor environments are often drier than what some plants need. This is especially true during the winter when heaters are running. You can increase humidity by misting your plants, placing them on a humidity tray with water and pebbles, or using a humidifier.
  5. Inspect and Clean: Check your plants regularly for any signs of pests, disease, or nutrient deficiencies. Over time, dust can accumulate on leaves, which can impact photosynthesis and attract pests. Gently wipe down leaves with a damp cloth to keep them clean and healthy.

These general tips will help you get familiar with your plants and their specific needs. If you are new to growing indoor plants, this is a great place to start. Everything takes time, and starting with the basics will help your indoor plants thrive!
